The Relationship Between Carpet And Indoor Air Quality
Apr-14-2021

In the past few years, the chemical smell of certain carpets has become the focus of attention. It was once rumored that the chemical volatiles of carpets are harmful to the environment. Conclusion: The chemical volatiles of carpets in floor coverings are the least, and the volatiles of carpets will not cause harm to human health.

Pollutants in indoor air quality, including chemical components, microscopic particles and bacteria, mold spores, the chemical components of which are "Volatile Organic Compounds" (VOC), chemical volatiles on carpets, according to the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) The organization’s test and test case calculation: The carpet VOC emissions in the building are the least, and other emission factors are 30 to 1000 times higher than that of the carpet.

The main component of carpet VOC is "tetraphenylcycloethylene" (4-PC), which is a trace by-product of synthetic rubber latex, the bonding material of carpet, which is the kind of chemical volatiles that can smell the smell of new carpets. , Its concentration in indoor air is extremely low, about one part per billion. American toxicologists conducted a large number of tests on carpet 4-PC, and the results were not found to have a significant effect on the human body. This is consistent with the test conclusion of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency that "the compound is not toxicologically obvious", so the new carpet smell 4 -PC is not a substance with high indoor air quality that can harm the human body.

Although carpet 4-PC emissions are very small and volatile, it is not a substance that harms the human body. However, the carpet industry is still earnestly improving the process to eliminate the new carpet 4-PC. The "Green Mark" for carpets created by the American Carpet Association (CRI) means that after testing, the amount of chemical volatiles emitted by the carpet meets strict acceptance standards and is given a green mark. At present, more than 90% of carpets in the United States wear green environmental protection signs.

The Chinese standard GB18587 is equivalent to the American CRI standard, and it has been tested that most Chinese enterprises meet the requirements of this standard.
