Tufted cloth is coated with a thin layer of synthetic latex on the main backing, and then attached with jute fabric or other fabric auxiliary backing materials. The emulsion is cured by heating in an oven. This process is called back coating (Figure 13.11).
The main function of the auxiliary backing is to fix the tufts (or Terry) and give the carpet dimensional stability. In some cases, the foam backing can be used as a cheap liner. For places where an impermeable backing is required, such as hospitals, a harder polymer backing coating, such as polyurethane, can be used. The so-called integral backing carpet has no separate auxiliary backing, but is coated with a thick latex coating. These only apply to direct adhesive installation where the carpet is stuck to the floor.
Due to the cutting effect, the two ends of the cut pile carpet are slightly different in length. Light shearing (or cutting) is usually performed to trim the pile to produce a smooth and uniform surface. This treatment can also be used for high and low Terry fluff to produce a cut Terry texture.
